Things I like

A few months ago I stumbled across an Instagram post from this artist doing interesting rubber hose-ish style illustration work in bottle form that in some ways reminded me of a weird show I once watched called The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack (very weird). His work, although very different, gave me a similar feeling to the one I had when I first fell in love with Bryan Donnelly's work, aka KAWS. There's something about how both artists take these cute, almost toy like characters and give them this weight, this presence that makes you stop and stare. Each piece takes on its own life.
The artist is Matthew Callaby, known as MrCallaby, a British artist currently based in Bristol. Five years ago, he stepped out of the world of ad agencies and became a full-time artist. And now knowing that he used to work at an agency, I totally understand why his chosen art form involves bottles of alcohol. If you know, you know.
His most recent exhibition, CHEERS, held in London this September, explores the theme of social drinking through both on canvas work as well as hand-painted vinyl bottle sculptures. The sculptures are what really got me. Each one is a character expressing a particular feeling associated with an evening of drinking. Some capture the vibe a fire Friday night, while others show how you look the next morning after the bottle got the best of you and life came at you fast. We've all been there (not me though) All in all as someone who appreciates good design and has survived agency life, I like his work a lot.
